Since graduating with a Master of Science from the University of Toronto in 2006, Darryl has practiced as an orthopaedic physiotherapist. In 2008, pursued further continuing education and completed his Master of Clinical Science in Manipulative Therapy at Western University. He has been a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapists since completing his advanced examinations in 2009.

Darryl’s current role is multifaceted. He is a clinical operations manager for DSD Management, a company that delivers physiotherapy and rehabilitation services within 15 clinics throughout southern Ontario. His role is to ensure DSD clinicians are accountable for the delivery of high quality services within a patient-centered model of care. He is also accountable for the clinical and business development for the company. Darryl continues to work clinically in a consultant model with orthopaedic and neurosurgeons to enhance the patient experience and triage to the right person, in the right place, at the right time. He has a special interest in the conservative and operative management (hip arthroscopy) of non-arthritic hip pain, as well as spine.

Darryl devotes his time to the advocacy and promotion of the physiotherapy profession through volunteering at provincial and national associations and committees. Darryl is an active member of the Private Practice, Leadership and Orthopaedic Divisions of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA). He is the current Chair of the Private Practice Division. In this role, he is responsible for the evolution and execution of the Division’s mission to assist private practice physiotherapist owners, contractors, administrators and employees in meeting the diverse and changing needs of patient care, business practices, quality improvement, and legislation through ethical behaviour, continued competence and advocacy for the profession. Darryl is currently contributing to the development and execution of two novel CPA programs: Private Clinic Owners Program; and electronic Outcome Measures (eOM). He also represents private practice physiotherapy in Canada at an International level as a member of the International Private Physical Therapist Association (IPPTA).

Darryl holds teaching positions at two Ontario universities. He is a lecturer in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto for the Business and Practice Management Theme. He is also the course manager and professor for the Business and Entrepreneurship in Physical Therapy course at Western University. Darryl is passionate about enhancing clinicians understanding of how the ‘business’, regulatory and legislative aspects of healthcare influence clinical practice, and the attention clinicians must give to this to establish an appropriate balance in their service delivery and operational sustainability throughout health system reform. Darryl also provides guest-lectures at McMaster University to deliver content on business and practice management in the physiotherapy curriculum. Part of his role at McMaster University is to serve on the Clinical Advisory Group to analyze current trends in clinical education and the private practice sector. He is also a clinical instructor offering ‘expanded role’ internships for physiotherapy students across Ontario.

Darryl dedicates time educating and mentoring physiotherapists. Another passion of his is to facilitate the new graduate transition from student to entry-level clinician and encourage a positive initial work experience. He is an assistant instructor within the London Unit of the Orthopaedic Division’s post-graduate curriculum. And a clinical mentor for physiotherapists either completing the Master of Clinical Science in Manipulative Therapy at Western University or those working toward their fellowship in manipulative therapy through the Division. Darryl has received awards to acknowledge his service as a physiotherapist providing excellence in learning, guidance, supervision and inspiration to physiotherapy students.

Darryl has made numerous academic contributions in the form of clinical research, interprofessional collaboration research, and clinical education. He has published two journal articles in Physiotherapy Canada and is the author of a book chapter entitled “The Evidence for Rehab after Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) Surgery: a guide to post-surgical rehab and supporting evidence (currently in editing). Darryl is also actively speaking at various seminars and provincial/national meetings including annual CPA, OPA and OHA conferences, as well as invited to lecture at multiple post-secondary institutions in Ontario.
