Making Business Your Business

Brittany Kafka

Physiotherapists are in the business of helping people. Business is about not only aspects of marketing and finance, it’s also about constant improvements and pursuing excellence. This pursuit of excellence helps to draw the link connecting physiotherapy and business. Whether you’re managing a clinic or working within one, here’s why you, as a physiotherapist, should be making business your business.

1. Giving yourself purpose

All businesses need a mission statement that directs their vision. Now, envision yourself as an independent business commodity. What are your missions and goals as a physiotherapist? Use these goals and missions to drive your practice and your treatment of clients. This personal mission statement can help keep you focused, reinforce your pursuit of excellence, and can help prevent monotony.

2. Clients receive the best care possible

All businesses strive and compete to give you the best product possible. Apply that perspective to viewing your services, and your physiotherapy abilities, as the product that you want to be the best. Therefore, by focusing on having the best product and trying to retain clients, your focus is on providing them with the best care possible.

3. Building a better future

Adopting an attitude that emphasizes business and business development serves to help develop, improve, and progress the physiotherapy profession. By looking for new and innovative ways to fill the gaps that exist in patient care, physiotherapists can not only improve their interactions with their clients, but will also be able to advocate for the profession as a whole. This advocacy can help demonstrate our worth as a profession to other health care practitioners and the general population alike.

Making business your business as a physiotherapist is a key way to give yourself direction, improve care for your clients, promote the growth and development of the physiotherapy profession. Don’t be intimidated by the word business, as the attributes of self-improvement, creativity, and problem solving which are key in business, are already skills that are utilized in the physiotherapy profession. Making business your business is about seeing and applying these attributes through the physiotherapy lens.
