Julie Medwid, Student Representative for the Private Practice Division of the CPA
Do you feel prepared to apply for your first physiotherapy job?
You may be thinking…
- I’m still a student, I don’t need to think about that yet
- Of course I am prepared, I get good grades and I am going to pass my national exam, what else is there to do?
- I am definitely not prepared and don’t know how to prepare
Whether you identify with A, B, or C, consider the following statements. Many of you at some point in your career will be managing a department or clinic, implementing a policy, negotiating a contract in either the public or private sector, or owning a business. More new graduates are choosing to work in the private sector than ever before. For example, 60% of physiotherapists between the ages of 20 to 29 work in private practice according to Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) data from 2012.
In Ontario, 100% of the 2017 PT graduates at Queen’s University are registered to work in the private sector. Physio is a unique opportunity to switch between or operate in both public and private sectors and many physiotherapists choose to do so.
What sets you apart from the other 50+ graduates in your class all entering the job market with you? What skills will you bring to your first job as a physiotherapist that your classmates will not?
It’s the networking, volunteering, leadership opportunities, and real-world knowledge you don’t always get in university that can place you ahead of the pack. Lay the groundwork now to build a foundation for yourself and create that career path you want.
The CPA Private Practice Division (PPD) can be that vehicle for you. Our goal is to provide a supportive community and easy-to-access information that is meaningful to you. We offer information and connect you to the resources that will be valuable to you as a student and new grad entering the job market. Plus, we like to throw out a few contests every once in a while, just to make things even more fun.
Connect with us on Facebook, Instagram, and via our website to stay up-to-date and connected. Also, the PPD’s private group on ignitephysio is a great way to connect with clinicians in the field by asking questions and receiving meaningful answers. All the information is free to students and you can contact us on our social media platforms with any questions or suggestions you may have.
